About
What Thirdlight is, and who makes it.
Thirdlight is an AI relationship-coaching service. It runs live voice sessions with Elena, an AI coach — for one person, or for a couple. One subscription covers both partners, and the first session is free.
This page is written for anyone who needs to know what the company does before they try the product. If you want to see the product instead, how it works walks through a first month.
The service
What Thirdlight is.
Thirdlight is an AI relationship-coaching service for couples and for people working on a relationship on their own. Members have live voice sessions with Elena, an AI coach, in an ordinary web browser: a free intro session of about 15 minutes on their own, then 45-minute sessions with both partners in the room, with shorter private check-ins in between. One subscription costs $24.99 a month and covers both partners, whether a member starts alone or together. The first session is free and asks for no account and no card. Thirdlight is a coaching product: it is not therapy, not medical care, and not a crisis service.

The product
What the product does.
Five things, in the order a member meets them. The same sequence is written out at length, with screenshots of the room, on the how-it-works page.
First
A solo intro session
Nearly everyone arrives alone. A few short questions — a first name, what is going on, one line in their own words — and then about 15 minutes talking out loud with Elena about one recurring problem. It needs no account and no card, and the written note at the end is kept whether or not the person comes back.
Then
An invitation to the other partner
Elena writes the invitation herself, in a tone the member picks and can edit, so it does not arrive as an accusation. The invited partner gets their own private introduction with her before any joint session happens — no forms, no card, nothing to install.
Weekly
Sessions together, 45 minutes
A joint session runs to a fixed shape: a short check-in, each partner saying what they want more of and less of while the other listens, one real topic worked through, the pattern named in plain words, one skill practised out loud, and one thing to try during the week. Both partners get the same written note afterwards. The plan includes 4 sessions a month.
In between
Private check-ins
Each partner has a private room with Elena for shorter conversations between sessions. Anything said there is never shown, quoted, or summarised to the other partner. She uses what she learns to steer the joint work without revealing where it came from — the limited-confidentiality policy a couples practice runs.
Throughout
The notebook
One note per session, the week's move, and the topics that keep coming up, in one place both partners can read. It does not score the relationship. It stays readable after a member cancels, which is written into the terms rather than promised in marketing.
Sessions are never recorded as audio. A written record of each session is kept and is read by Thirdlight to run and improve the service; it is never shown to the other partner, never sold, and never used to train AI models. The whole model is set out in the privacy policy.
The method
Where the coaching comes from.
Nothing in a session is improvised. Elena works from an original synthesis written for this product and built on decades of published research on what makes couples last — emotion-focused couples work, behavioral couples methods, and structured repair conversations. It is not a licensed or affiliated programme, and Thirdlight is not endorsed by or connected to any named clinical institute or training body.
The research is published on this site rather than summarised in a claim, which is the part a sceptical reader should check first. The science page states what the evidence supports, with every figure traced to a named study and the caveat carried in the same sentence as the number — and it prints what the evidence does not say, including the widely repeated findings this company refuses to quote. The articles hub publishes one peer-reviewed study per write-up, with that study’s limits on the same page as its finding.
The honest answer to the question underneath all of it: no published trial of an AI couples coach exists, and Thirdlight has no outcome data of its own. Both sentences are on the science page too.
The company
Who is behind it.
Leland Char, founder
Thirdlight was founded and is run by Leland Char — one person, with no employees and no co-founders. He writes to members himself, and leland@thirdlight.app reaches him rather than a queue. The team page names him with his public LinkedIn and GitHub profiles, so that this is checkable somewhere other than here.
The limits
What Thirdlight is not.
Stated here rather than in the small print, because a reader deciding whether to trust this is entitled to the boundary before the pitch.
- Is this therapy?
- No. Thirdlight is a coaching product. Elena is not a licensed psychologist, psychotherapist or psychiatrist, she does not diagnose, treat or prescribe, and sessions do not replace the advice of a licensed human professional. When a human professional is what someone needs, she says so rather than keeping them here.
- Is the coach a person?
- No. Elena is an AI, and she says so in the first minute of a first session, before anyone has told her anything. Members who arrive sceptical usually find that a relief.
- Is it an emergency or crisis service?
- No, and it is not appropriate for emergencies, abuse or self-harm situations. Sessions are not monitored by people, and nobody here can call for help on a member's behalf. The safety page lists verified crisis lines by country.
- Who can use it?
- Adults, 18 or over. Thirdlight serves the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia. It does not serve the UK, Ireland or the EU, and that is a deliberate decision rather than a gap: the consent flows and representative appointments European law requires have not been built.
Contact
How to reach us.
One address, and it reaches a person. Write about anything — a question about the product, a privacy or data request under the privacy policy, a dispute under the terms, press, or a partnership.
Thirdlight is not an emergency service, and email is not monitored for emergencies. If someone may be in danger, call your local emergency number; the safety page lists crisis lines by country.
